Atomic Barra Tool Steel Headstuds: Overview
- Standard | 12mm Studs
- Oversize | 14mm Studs
Product Features
Our head studs are the strongest available in standard size! Made from H-13 Tool Steel, they come with extra-large washers that help spread the load evenly as the nut tightens. The 12mm head stud kit suits BA-on Ford Barra DOHC 6 cyl. engines. This kit includes:
- 12pt double hex nuts
- Oversize washers (28mm OD)
- Installation instructions
The studs are designed to properly bottom out, featuring a bottoming tip, ensuring full engagement on both the nut and the thread on the top of the stud. Additionally, no modifications to the head are required.
12mm Stud Material Strengths Comparison
ARP2000
ARP2000 is a proprietary alloy steel from ARP (Automotive Racing Products), known for its high tensile strength (around 220,000 psi) and excellent fatigue resistance. It’s a popular choice for connecting rods and head studs in high-performance engines.
Chromoly 8740
Chromoly 8740 is a chrome-molybdenum steel offering a great balance of strength (180,000 – 210,000 psi tensile strength), toughness, and fatigue resistance. It’s commonly used in racing and aerospace applications.
L19
L19 is a high-strength alloy steel with excellent wear resistance and a tensile strength higher than ARP2000 (around 260,000 psi). It’s ideal for demanding applications like high-pressure valve components and fasteners in high-stress environments.
H13 Tool Steel
H13 Tool Steel is a hot-work tool steel known for its exceptional toughness, wear resistance, and ability to withstand high temperatures. With a tensile strength of roughly 300,000 psi, it is perfect for extreme heat and stress applications, though it may be overkill for standard studs unless the price is comparable to other materials.
