Atomic Performance Valve Springs
Standard valve springs often lose tension quickly, leading to “valve float,” where the valve doesn’t seal properly, causing misfires, rough idling, or stalling. This issue is worsened by turbo boost, which reduces the effective spring tension. For example, with 7 pounds of boost, valve spring pressure can drop from 50 lbs to 25.5 lbs, which is insufficient for most applications.
Atomic’s heavy-duty and race springs are conically wound to fit both the base and smaller OD retainer precisely. Unlike repackaged or generic springs, these are custom-made from high-quality nickel chrome vanadium steel, heat-treated, shot-peened, and sold in matched sets for SOHC and DOHC engines. They require no additional cylinder head machining and are compatible with both standard and Atomic camshafts. Standard retainers, seals, and locks can be reused, making them a reliable upgrade.
